Artist Statment
A lot of people have certain things in the world that make them feel at home or calm like a certain smell, fabric that resembles a blanket you used to have, or a favorite song that you used to sing in the car with your parents. For me home is the theater in art. I grew up with artistic parents, my mom being a ballerina a costumer and my dad being a musician and a great storyteller. I came out on the other side as a puppeteer. Through my art I can create worlds and characters people have never seen before.
The reason I love to make puppets is because it is the art and performance. You could make a puppet and just have it hanging in an Art Museum but that's not the point of puppetry. It is meant to be seen in the theater performing and coming to life to inspire younger generations to be creative and whimsical. My art is to never show people how horrible the world is, injustices, or even to make someone feel uneasy but rather enjoy the art and be immersed in a happy silly world where animals sing and dance. There is enough art about how cruel people can't be and I would rather show people how amazing art and theater is.
I make each character unique in their own way just as I feel everyone is unique and has a different story to tell. My monsters are funny little party animals and I would never make them mean or scary. I preferably use these puppets with a full puppet stage along with music such as ragtime,Broadway, and sometimes opera. My performance is to invoke happiness,
music education, and creativity among all ages.
